But in general, the thing that makes the folk pattern work is the dynamics. Make sure you are plucking just the root note of the chord on beat 1, (just 1 string). Then beat 2 should be a full strum. Beat 3 (and the upbeat after beat 3) should be soft. Beat 4 should be full and hard.
Do it over and over again while holding just 1 chord to try to wrap your mind around it, before trying to sing and do transitions.
