I love this song, I sing it my head since I’ve heard it recently. However, I have real trouble voicing some parts of it while accompanying myself, in particular the E on the word “raise” in the chorus. I am supposed to play a D chord at the same time, and I invariably sing either a D or (probably) an F#, taking my cue from the chord I am playing.

What is an E doing anyway on the top of a D chord or, to put it another way, what is the D chord doing under an E note in the song?
