Glad you’re here James!
You are correct about Jonathan. He is a man of faith and a family man. He is conscientious in trying to always give us the best tools to make us better guitar players.
Looks like you’ve had a bit of a gap in your guitar playing experience but the important thing is that you have returned to it.
All the best to you James. -

Thank you both for the helps. I’ve getting back in to the guitar after spending time in Guatemala with Faith in Practice. Please pray for the people of Guatemala in the aftermath of the volcanic eruption from Mt. Fuego. I was actually in Antigua with Fuego providing a backdrop daily.

Jonathan
I went through the replay of the foundations of strumming and i’d like to say that you’ve done an excellent job.But just to make sure that I understood the content of this course may I resume it in saying that as long as you are following the measure of a song you can strum one, two, four, eight or sixteen strokes depending how you feel it.Am I right?

My current purpose and plan is multifaceted like you Ann.
Purpose:
- I love music. It is a universal language. You can transmit emotion and energy through it, and connect with people soul to soul. I have always wanted to share like that. I still want to get to the skill level (like I described in my Introduction) to play favorite songs, and maybe even write my own.
- I recently fou…

I have many ongoing goals and will continue with them. For example, continually trying to improve my strumming, chord changes and learning new songs. In addition my new goal is to learn the Inverse Pattern that Jonathan has shown us with Great Is Thy Faithfulness. My main purpose for learning this new pattern is to add a softer technique and a more melodic sound to my playing.

Update: I have a small list of things I have noticed:
- My posture affects the guitar position. (not sure how drastic this can affect play)
- My posture is affected by the type of chair I sit in when playing.
- My right forearm rests on the guitar body, and my arm pivots on that point.
- When strumming: My hand/wrist do not pivot in a consistent arc pattern like yours does in the pr…

If I click on the “message box” icon, I get a new box, that constantly has the updating wheel. It doesn’t progress any.
Hope this helps.

Hello Jonathan,
I have an orange highlighted message by my name on the top menu bar of the webpage. It says I have 2 unread notifications. I cannot get to them. I am pretty sure I have read replies to my questions, however, I tried clicking on the orange highlight icon.
It takes me to a boxed set with notifications, friends, etc. When I hover or click with a mouse, I do not get my…Read More

Hello Mr. Mathers,
I share your finger issues, and your frustration with them. I did get a little better with practice.
As for the sound, I am not sure how to help. I have seen little tests to see if the guitar needs adjusted, like measuring tune on the 12 fret, string height, or harmonics. I am not a luthier, but I have watched and asked them questions.
As for my sound pro…Read More

Hello Mr. Mathers,
I am glad you are back practicing. I admit I have days when I had so many tasks, I could not even get near my guitar. I recently had family visiting for an extended stay, and I just couldn’t stop to practice because of all of the hostess demands on me. I did miss “me and my guitar” time.
I am not sure your previous teacher really was “teaching” you. Inst…Read More

I think I confirmed my frustration for going and forth with the G (4 finger & 3 finger G, C, EM etc) when I play the Cadd9 family (4 finger chords) I’m not happy with the sound, plus the D?F# is very hard for me to play. I am trying to keep my pinky and ring fingers down hard but the sound just doesn’t sound as good as a G and C chords. any suggestions? I know practice makes perfect but I…Read More

I have been playing off and on a song by LANCO, its called “Greatest Love Story”
I would love to see how you do the strumming pattern. I think I focus too much on the strumming pattern and should just try to play the song.

Hi everyone,
My name is Rich Mathers and I live in NJ. I will soon be 57 and live by the Jersey shore, so summer time is a busy time for me. I have been playing guitar off and on for a few years and seem to get frustrated when I get in a groove, attempt to get to the next level and then I stop. I started out with private lessons and it didn’t work out. It seemed like my instructor got…Read More

Hey Jonathan,
I think I may try playing in front of a mirror to try and “see” what I am doing. If that doesn’t work, I may try recording myself with a camera. With what you are describing, I may not know how to fix my problem if I can’t “see” what I am doing when I mess up.
Until class-time,
Cheryl

Hello Jonathan,
Just curious, as I have noticed I have to keep my eyes on two places at once while I am in this next phase: When I change chords, I keep failing to keep my base note “pick” on the correct string for the folk pattern, then I have to keep checking my fingers for the correct chord position. I almost feel like I am working my neck harder than my fingers!
I think I need t…Read More
