When playing the folk pattern with a chord whose root is not the lowest note (for example F#m in the E family), which note should be played on the first beat? I’ve tried playing the lowest note, but it sounds odd, shouldn’t we rather play the root?

Hey Aida. When playing the folk pattern, you should always play the root note of the chord for beat 1 of the measure. Which will not always be the low E string. Like you said, the F#m, A2, C#m, Bsus4, and G#m in the E family, all have the A string as their root note. Only the E chord has the E string as the root note.
